Eggs or Cereal?

Every morning, the question is coming.

•••

The soft, crescendo alarm begins on my phone, then soon I am awake. But first, just one snooze tap. A few minutes later, the crescendo returns and up I get. T-shirt, bottoms, socks, then off to our daughter’s room I go. Oh how I enjoy this ritual. If it were not so early in the morning, I would enjoy it even more (like weekends).

I turn on then lamp then straighten the bedding, all while she is still asleep. The gentle tug of the bedding allows for a more peaceful awakening than, “Hey! It’s time to get up!” She even complimented me on my process to wake her. Yay! I try to treat her like I want to be treated.

Well, she is still asleep and the process continues. “Good morning,” I whisper in her ear. If she is remotely awake, she will respond with the same words. Then I gently squeeze from her neck to her back, then to her legs and feet. In case you are wondering, I used to be a licensed massage therapist. This gentle massage gets the blood flowing, aiding her gradual awakening. It’s like letting your car warm up before driving in freezing temperatures, or stretching before exercise.

By now, she’s mostly awake. I used to proceed to laying her clothes out, but now she chooses them herself. Now the question comes. “Eggs or cereal,” I ask. After a few seconds, a stretch and maybe a moan, she replies. Before leaving the room and closing the door, I say, “Change your clothes.” If she responds, I know that I can proceed.

Downstairs I go, and breakfast is prepared. Usually, she prefers eggs. Yes, if she wants eggs, I make eggs for her every morning. Yogurt and toast accompany them. It is my pleasure. I get to make breakfast for my ladies and I enjoy it! In addition to breakfast, there is lunch prep and hair-styling, which my wife and I share. Tis a fun, early, family affair.

What does your morning look like?
