Lakeside
DeKalb County • Atlanta, GA • Decatur, GA
One of metro Atlanta’s most sought-after public school districts; and the community that people move to, stay in, and return to for a reason.
People don’t stumble into the Lakeside High School district. They seek it out. They research it, drive the streets, talk to the neighbors, and come back. And once they’re here, most of them never want to leave.
I’m Dexter Alexander Culbreath, a Global Real Estate Advisor with Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty. I didn’t discover this district through a market report. I’m a Lakeside High School graduate. My family has deep ties here. My daughter attended Briarlake Elementary, right on Lavista Road. This is my community, and helping families find their place in it is the most meaningful work I do.
Why People Choose the Lakeside High School District?
Ask anyone who lives here and they’ll tell you the same thing. It’s not just one thing that draws people. It’s everything working together.
The location is a big part of it. The Lakeside district sits along the Lavista Road corridor in DeKalb County, close enough to Decatur, Buckhead, Midtown, and Atlanta to feel connected, and far enough away to feel like you can actually breathe. Major employers like Emory University, the CDC, and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta are right down the road, which means a lot of residents here don’t just love the neighborhood, they work nearby too.
The schools have long, proud histories and reputations that speak for themselves. The shops and restaurants that line the corridor mean you rarely need to venture far. But ask the people who live here what really keeps them, and the answer is almost always the same. It’s the neighbors. Authentic, genuine people who care about each other and the community they share. That kind of thing is rare. And it’s priceless.
About Lakeside High School
Lakeside High School has been one of DeKalb County’s most recognized public high schools for decades; known equally for its academics, its athletics, and the community pride that runs through everything it does. I walked those halls as a student, and that experience shapes how I talk about this school to every client I work with.
Academics
Lakeside consistently outperforms DeKalb County and Georgia state averages on standardized assessments. The school offers Advanced Placement coursework across a wide range of subjects, with an AP participation rate of 55% — meaning more than half of Lakeside students are engaging with college-level curriculum. Gifted and Talented programming is available, as are joint enrollment programs with local colleges and universities for students ready to pursue college coursework while still in high school.
Athletics
Lakeside’s athletic tradition runs deep. The football program has claimed state championships, including a legendary 1972 season in which the team went unscored upon through the entire regular season. The men’s soccer team won a state championship in 2008, and Lakeside athletes compete across a wide range of sports through the Georgia High School Association (GHSA). Over the last ten graduating classes alone, 28 Lakeside players have gone on to play college or professional baseball.
Arts & Extracurriculars
The Lakeside band program is one of the most decorated in DeKalb County — performing in competitions as far as Chicago, Washington D.C., and Hawaii, and consistently producing the highest number of county students in the All-State Band. The program includes an active jazz band, marching band, winter drumline, and color guard. For students who want to go deep on something beyond the classroom, Lakeside delivers.
The Lakeside High School Cluster
The Lakeside district is a feeder cluster, meaning your elementary school experience flows naturally into middle school and then into Lakeside High School. Each school in the cluster has its own identity and reputation, and together they form one of the most cohesive public school pipelines in metro Atlanta.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
Sagamore Hills Elementary
Situated at the heart of the Sagamore Hills neighborhood, a true community anchor where neighbors know each other and school pride runs deep.

Oak Grove Elementary
A neighborhood school with deep roots in the Oak Grove community along the Lavista Road corridor. My alma mater.

Briarlake Elementary
Located directly on Lavista Road, Briarlake ranks in the top 20% of Georgia elementary schools and offers a Gifted & Talented program, an ASL Signing Club, and an Atlanta Track Club partnership. My daughter was proud to be a Briarlake student.

Hawthorne Elementary
Serving the Northlake area within the Lakeside cluster.
MIDDLE SCHOOL

Henderson Middle School
The feeder middle school for Lakeside High School, serving students from across the cluster and preparing them for one of DeKalb County’s most recognized high school programs.
HIGH SCHOOL

Lakeside High School
The heart of the district with strong academics, a storied athletic tradition, an exceptional arts program, and a community of students, teachers, and families who genuinely invest in one another. I’m proud to call it my alma mater.
Neighborhoods in the Lakeside High School District
The Lakeside district spans several distinct neighborhoods along the Lavista Road corridor—each with its own character, price range, and reasons to love it. I specialize in all of them.
Sagamore Hills
A tight-knit community where neighbors know each other by name and Sagamore Hills Elementary sits at the center of it all. Clean streets, established homes, and the kind of community pride that’s immediately visible.
Oak Grove
A spread-out, walkable community anchored by two beloved neighborhood hubs: Oak Grove Market and Vista Grove Plaza. It’s where locals gather daily for food, coffee, and good company. I grew up walking these streets.
Northlake
A commercial hub with quiet residential pockets tucked just behind it, and one of the most connected addresses on the corridor. Often the most accessible entry point into the Lakeside district by price.
Why Work With Dexter in the Lakeside District
I’m not an agent who researched this community and decided to specialize here. I’m someone who grew up here, went to school here, raised a child here, and chose to build a career here. The Lakeside High School district isn’t my market. It’s my home.
I attended Oak Grove Elementary and graduated from Lakeside High School. My cousins went to Sagamore Hills Elementary while I was just down the road at Oak Grove. My daughter attended Briarlake Elementary on Lavista Road. I’ve walked these neighborhoods, ridden the school bus through these streets, and watched this community grow and change over decades while holding onto everything that makes it worth choosing.
