Northlake
DeKalb County • Atlanta, GA • Tucker, GA
A commercial hub with quiet residential pockets — and one of the most convenient addresses on the Lavista Road corridor.
Northlake is the kind of place that surprises people. Pull off Lavista Road or I-285 and you find yourself in a busy, well-connected commercial area with restaurants, shopping, and entertainment all within reach. Then turn down one of the residential streets tucked just behind it all, and the pace shifts entirely to tree-lined, established, and genuinely neighborly.
I’m Dexter Alexander Culbreath, a Global Real Estate Advisor with Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty. I’ve known Northlake since I was a teenager walking over from Oak Grove, and I rode the school bus through its residential streets every day as a student at Lakeside High School. My daughter attended Briarlake Elementary, right here on Lavista Road. And now I get to walk those same streets as a Realtor®. There’s something deeply full-circle about that.
About Northlake
Northlake sits at the outer end of the Lavista Road corridor, where DeKalb County meets easy access to I-285 and the broader Tucker area. It’s a commercial hub in the truest sense—active, well-trafficked, and full of options for dining, shopping, and entertainment. But the residential streets that wind behind the commercial corridors tell a different story: established homes, mature trees, and the kind of quiet that’s increasingly hard to find this close to a major highway interchange.
For buyers who want connectivity without sacrificing neighborhood feel, Northlake delivers. You can be on I-285 in minutes, at Emory Healthcare in a short drive, or walking into a restaurant for dinner without ever getting on a highway. That combination of residential calm with commercial convenience right outside the door, is exactly what a certain kind of buyer is looking for.
Northlake is also a compelling entry point into the Lakeside High School district, often offering more square footage and lot size per dollar than neighborhoods closer to the North Druid Hills end of the corridor.
What’s Around Northlake
Northlake has quietly built one of the more well-rounded activity corridors in northeast Atlanta. Between the dining, shopping, and entertainment options, residents rarely need to go far.
Dining
The Northlake area has a strong and diverse restaurant scene that keeps locals coming back. Fork In The Road brings a neighborhood gastropub feel, Jim ‘N Nick’s is a longtime BBQ favorite, and Red Lobster remains a family staple. For something with a little more energy, Kobe and KPot draw crowds for hibachi and Korean BBQ that’s become a go-to for date nights and group dinners alike.
Shopping
Northlake Promenade, Briarcliff Village, and Northlake Festival give residents distinct retail experiences within easy reach, from everyday errands to specialty shopping. And while Northlake Mall has transformed significantly over the years, with Emory Healthcare now occupying a large portion of the former retail space, the surrounding commercial corridor has continued to grow and evolve around it.
Entertainment
Movie Tavern has been a neighborhood anchor for years, offering the kind of dine-in movie experience that makes a Tuesday night feel like an occasion. And the Londzell Performing Arts Theatre brings a cultural dimension to Northlake that sets it apart from other commercial corridors in the area.
Northlake Schools
Northlake falls within the Lakeside High School district. And for many buyers, that’s the deciding factor. My connection to this school cluster runs deep and personal. I rode the school bus through these residential streets every day as a Lakeside High School student. And my daughter attended Briarlake Elementary, right here on Lavista Road. This isn’t a school district I researched. It’s one my own family has lived.

Briarlake Elementary School
Located directly on Lavista Road, Briarlake is one of DeKalb County’s standout elementary schools, consistently ranking in the top 20% of Georgia elementary schools. It offers a Gifted & Talented program, an exceptionally engaged school community, and some truly unique extracurriculars—including an ASL Signing Club that pairs hearing students with deaf and hard-of-hearing peers, and a Track Club in partnership with the Atlanta Track Club. My daughter was proud to be a Briarlake student, and it’s easy to see why families love this school.

Henderson Middle School
A well-regarded middle school serving the boarder Lakeside cluster.

Lakeside High School
One of metro Atlanta’s most sought-after public high schools, known for strong academics, athletics, and a deeply connected community. I walked those halls myself.
Homes zoned for the Lakeside High School district consistently attract motivated, informed buyers. This means strong long-term demand and value for Northlake homeowners.
Location and Access
Northlake’s position at the I-285 and Lavista Road interchange makes it one of the most connected addresses on the corridor. For buyers who commute across the metro, or who simply value being able to get anywhere quickly, it’s hard to beat.
- I-285 access: One of the easiest on-ramps in northeast DeKalb County
- Emory Healthcare (Northlake): Practically next door
- Tucker and surrounding communities: Just minutes east
- Oak Grove and the broader Lavista Road corridor: A straight shot west
- Decatur and Intown Atlanta: Accessible without getting on a highway
