A Simple Tip For Making Meals Merry

While my family was busy surprising family and friends for their birthdays last weekend, we came upon a surprise ourselves. You see, my daughter and I were enjoying a delicious meal at The Cheesecake Factory, while my wife connected with friends elsewhere. All of sudden, I looked up and noticed us (my family) sitting a few tables down. I know, right? How could we be in two places at once? Well, we weren’t actually. I saw a family doing what we do sometimes, so it sent me into flashback mode.

As a people enthusiast, I really enjoy interaction with almost everyone. So, whenever I see a person, I usually want to strike up conversation with them. I can hear my introvert friends saying, “Nope! Not me!” Ha ha! I totally understand, but hopefully this little tip will get you out of your shell just a bit. I’m not singling out introverts here though. This challenge is for all of us. Read on and give it a shot!

For me, meals are no different when it comes to wanting to engage with others. When my family visits a restaurant, I often think of ways to genuinely engage beyond the norm. Lately I have introduced a few apps that have various multiplayer options, but nothing beats my original idea. I introduced it years ago on a random date night. Here’s what happened. I pulled a red box from my pocket. Then, I flipped the top and opened it. Finally, I turned the box upside down and out they came. Can you guess the best card game ever? That’s right! UNO! After almost 50 years, UNO is still thrilling countless groups of people around the world. And, I noticed the thrill happening just a few tables down from us.

A family of four was enjoying each other’s company over a scrumptious meal, and UNO had contributed to it. Though we were having plenty of fun of our own, I told my daughter that I had to go talk to them. She knows how much I love people, so she graciously permitted it. I approached the family, introduced myself and shared how their interaction encouraged me. I then asked permission to capture a photo and compose this piece about them. I am so glad that said, “yes.” It was amazing. It reminded me of my family. Their daughter was reading a book, while the rest enjoyed friendly competition.

So, it’s that simple. Keep a deck of UNO cards on you at all times. At any moment, you can take them out and have an amazing time with a stranger, family, or friends. Give it a try and let me know what happens in the comments.

Until next time…
